Shock injury news for Owls

Sheffield Wednesday had 3 key players make a significant step on the road to recovery in the reserves' 2-0 away at York City last night.

Considering the bad fortune that the Owls have had with injuries this season, the shock news element of this story may well be the fact that two of these players actually managed to come through the game unscathed.

Frank Simek and Steve Watson both played 90 minutes and although it is unlikely that either of them will be available for selection this weekend a 1st team spot may soon be on the horizon if they can get through another reserve outing next week.

The return of the duo, Simek especially, will come as a big boost to the Owls. The American international, widely regarded as one of the Owls best players, has been out of action since picking up an injury at Crystal Palace in December and although the team has not leaked too many goals since that time they have missed his solid positioning and his energetic overlapping support of Owls attacks down the right side.

Perhaps not so surprising is the news that the third of the long-term key absentees to make his return last night, Francis Jeffers, was substituted during the first-half having felt soreness in his ankle.

Jeffers managed to get on the score sheet before being withdrawn and it is hoped that he was taken off purely as a precautionary measure to ensure that his comeback was not hampered further rather than anything more serious.

An experienced Owls second string also featured the likes of Peter Gilbert, Ronnie Wallwork and Burton O'Brien.
