And the Missouri-born star is now hoping that he gets a chance to impress as USA look towards the Copa America and the 2010 World Cup.

"Yeah I am delighted," Simek mused over his call-up. "It is a bit of a downer being sent off against Wolves (last Saturday) but I got to the States on Sunday so hopefully I can get a game out there.

"For me, it's my first training camp so it is my opportunity to go and impress, it's my job now to go out there and show them what I can do and hopefully it is the start of great things to come.

"I think some of the older players have retired like the old captain Claudio Reyna and a few others as well but the coach is bringing in some new blood and hopefully I can stake my place for a spot in the team."

The US face Ecuador on Sunday and then fierce rivals Guatemala three days later and Simek is excited about the prospect of hopefully playing a part.

He added: "The Guatemala game will be a good game, so will the Ecuador match. But we have played Guatemala quite a bit recently and I think we have got the upper hand in a lot of the games but if I can get on the field for either of those games, it will be a big honour."

It has been a hectic few weeks for Simek after hearing about the call-up - especially after a busy period at Hillsborough.

He said: "I found out I was on the initial roster about three weeks ago but I found out I had made it into the real squad last Tuesday so it has been an unbelievable week for me to get my first call up to the US national squad, to get my first Hillsborough goal and unfortunately to get my red card - so it's been quite a chaotic week to say the least."

Meanwhile, Chris Brunt is hoping to impress for Northern Ireland as they travel to Liechtenstein tomorrow and then face Sweden on Wednesday.

And Brian Laws has signed Iain Turner for a further month on loan from Everton after the Scotsman impressed during his first six games.
