So far so good for Owls

With the international break giving Championship teams a weekend off and with around a quarter of the season played this seems like a good opportunity to reflect on the progress so far.

After a disappointing end to last season with Wednesday leaking goals left right and centre there was some trepidation ahead of the new campaign with a few pundits tipping the Owls for a season of struggle.

A lucrative takeover bid raised spirits but as the start of the season approached there were more questions than answers about this and as we all now know this proved to be yet another false dawn.

A tough start saw Wednesday travel to a Brighton side that finished last season in the top six followed by a home game against Derby County, who were unlucky not to win the play-off final. Few predicted a positive points return and even less could foresee consecutive clean sheets.

After a fantastic start the last few matches have seen the Owls stall a little but 17 points from 11 games, just 4 points behind the league leaders at this stage represents a healthy return.

The main cause for concern has been the results at Hillsborough. The 5 home league games to date have resulted in 1 win, 1 defeat and 3 draws. The performances have not been bad – the Owls were unlucky to lose to league leaders Forest and performed well in the draw against Derby but there is a need to take the game to the visitors in evenly matched encounters.

Generally there have been far more positives than negatives, particularly defensively. New signings Kieran Westwood and Tom Lees have been in excellent form, contributing towards the best defensive record in the division to date.

At the other end of the field Atdhe Nuhiu is clearly more comfortable having had a season to adapt to English football and Stevie May has shown positive signs and if he can find a clinical edge to his finishing he will surely prove to be an astute acquisition.

If the midfield pairing of Kieran Lee and Sam Hutchinson can get back up to full speed after the international break having recently recovered from injuries then Wednesday should continue to be competitive in the top half and improve upon their home results.
