In a fantastic day at Cardiff, Wednesday opened the scoring through JP McGovern before MacLean came off the bench to level the scores from the spot when Wednesday were seemingly dead and buried at 2-1 down with 9 minutes to play.

Paul Sturrock’s men thought pushed forward in extra time and got the deciding goals through Glenn Whelan and Drew Talbot to seal their place in the championship.

Rocastle said after the game: “There are lots of emotions at the moment - I am speechless but we did deserve that over the season. We didn't play great football on the day but the result was there in the end.

“This win goes back to my dad, my sister, the rest of my family and a big thank you to everyone as Wednesday and the supporters, they were absolutely unbelievable and hopefully they got what they paid for!“

MacLean echoed Rocastle’s comments but in all fairness, he did not think he had any chance of playing in Wednesday’s biggest game in years.

He told Hallam FM: “To be honest I am speechless. The crowd have been brilliant and a big thank you to everyone involved with Wednesday this season, we deserve it – it’s brilliant.

“We are a club who should be the in championship at least so let us push on and consolidate our position; we have the stadium, the supporters and we will do well next season.”

The Scotsman was injured in March and his season was over pretty quickly after that setback – or so it seemed.

“To be honest, my season was over and I nearly went on holiday but to be fair,” he admitted. “But massive praise goes to the physio and everyone concerned to help me get fit and play - I owe them a lot.”
