Sheffield Wednesday reserves were beaten once again in the League Cup despite putting out a side containing plenty of first team experience.
Last Tuesday the Owls second string were completely outclassed at Middlesbrough reserves and today it was the turn of Grimsby, whose first team are struggling near the foot of league two, to put one over the Owls.
Wednesday fielded Deon Burton and Francis Jeffers in attack, Jimmy Smith played in midfield as he looks to get back in contention following a lengthy suspension and he was accompanied in midfield by fellow loanee Lewis Buxton, the out-of-favour Kenny Lunt and in-form Rocky Lekaj.
Frank Simek got another 90 minutes under his belt and given the inconsistency of the Owls defensive performances so far this season he must surely be in line for a return to first team action.
Despite the presence of Simek at the back Wednesday couldn't prevent the visitors from racing into a two goal lead and although the Owls got a goal back before half-time they were unable to complete the comeback.
The goal may be the one positive note to come out of the game as it was scored by Francis Jeffers. With fellow striker Akpo Sodje to have his injury assessed this week Wednesday are in need of a clinical finisher and Jeffers has the potential to be that man if he can find his form and maintain his fitness.
Leon Clarke is the only Owls forward to have scored since Marcus Tudgay found the net against Charlton 10 games ago and Wednesday have not scored more than once in any match since that fixture.
