Wednesday held at home
Hull City were the first to show their teeth in this open Championship encounter at Hillsborough on Saturday but in the end the Tigers seemed happy to hold on for a draw as the Owls fought back in the 2nd half.
Both sides came into the game looking for improvement having each conceded 3 goals in defeats in their opening game and it was Hull who got on the front foot early. Within the first 5 minutes Evandro spurned an opportunity, skewing wide of the target then Bowen somehow ballooned the ball into the Kop from close range.
Wednesday grew into the game after the early scares and enjoyed more possession in the Hull half. Forestieri fired a long range effort down the throat of City goalkeeper Marshall before the best chance fell to Fletcher around the half-hour. Reach played in fine through ball into the path of the striker who went through on goal but saw his attempt to pass the ball into the bottom corner thwarted by the legs of the onrushing Marshall.
On 38 minutes the visitors took the lead when Bowen struck the base of the post from distance, the rebound fell to Evandro who was denied by a smart reaction save from Dawson but he could do nothing as the ball then fell at the feet of Frazier Campbell who fired into the net.
Wednesday lost Morgan Fox to injury just before half-time, Jordan Thorniley replacing him and they started the 2nd half well as they looked to get back on terms.
Within 5 minutes of the restart they forced a corner which Hull failed to clear and Forestieri was felled in the box. The diminutive forward stepped up and made no mistake from the penalty spot.
Having gained the momentum Wednesday remained in the ascendancy and should have taken the lead from another corner - Less headed back across goal to Fletcher who managed to head wide of the target from 6 yards. With around 20 minutes to go Reach dug out an excellent cross to find Fletcher at the back post but again he was off target, heading over as he stretched to get on the end of the cross.
In the final stages Forestieri jinked into a shooting position inside the box but was denied by Marshall and at the other end a speculative long range strike from Henriksen had to be tipped over the bar by Dawson and the visitors then had a shot deflected wide from the resulting corner.
Despite a slow start Wednesday will feel the probably did enough to have warranted a win, next up is a League Cup encounter at Sunderland on Thursday followed by a trip to Brentford in the league next Sunday.
