Unhappy holidays for Wednesday

Festive period ends with no points

Sheffield Wednesday's three festive period fixtures finished with a third successive defeat on New Years Day as Hull City won 1-0 at Hillsborough.

The Owls had the better of the first half with both Winnall and Reaching spurning presentable chances from Harris crosses and Harris seeing a well-placed shot cleared near the goal line following good work from Nuhiu.

With an hour gone Hull took the lead when in-form Jarrod Bowen clipped in a near finish following a low cross from Wednesday's right-side. The Owls huffed and puffed but failed to exert too much pressure on Long in the visitors goal. Fletcher fired just wide from a free-kick and Murphy put a teasing cross into the box late on that just evaded Fletcher and Rhodes.

It was another frustrating afternoon for the home side on the back of the injury time defeat at Stoke City on Boxing Day, followed by a home defeat to Cardiff City. Garry Monk's team went into this period of fixtures in 3rd place in the Championship on a 6-match unbeaten run but they come out of it in 7th place with the division looking as tight as ever.

Next up for Wednesday is a trip to Premier League Brighton in the F.A. Cup on Saturday and then a visit to Championship leaders Leeds United the following weekend.
