Wednesday continue fine form

Sheffield Wednesday recorded yet another pre-season victory this afternoon, beating league 2 side Bury by two goals to nil at Gigg Lane.

The Owls had to wait until the second half in the sweltering heat to take the lead but then two goals in a six-minute spell just before the hour mark wrapped up a routine win.

Both goals came from Leon Clarke, set up initially by the in-form Deon Burton and then Jermaine Johnson.

Akpo Sodje was given 30 minutes in the second half, locking horns with his brother Efe as he continues his comeback from injury and it is encouraging to see that Wednesday have four strikers looking fit and hungry as the new season approaches.

More concerning however is the fact that there was no place for Francis Jeffers meaning that the striker has yet to take to the field in any of the Owls pre-season games so far.

Captain Richard Wood missed the game through illness and new midfield signing Jimmy Smith was also absent again as he struggles to recover in time for the new season from a knock picked up in Holland.

Wednesday's pre-season fixture schedule continues at Saltergate, Chesterfield on Tuesday evening.
