Wednesday suffer more cup misery against Cambridge

Sheffield Wednesday were brought down to earth with a bang on Tuesday evening as League 2 Cambridge knocked them out of the League Cup at the first time of asking.

The Owls made 10 changes to the team that beat Aston Villa on Sunday but dominated large periods of the game and deservedly took the lead early in the second half when Lucas Joao cut in side and drilled a low shot home from close range.

Will Buckley making his Wednesday debut had hit the woodwork just before that and the visitors should really have put the game to bed shortly after but Nuhiu somehow managed to hit the bar from around 2 yards out.

Just as it seemed Wednesday had done enough to squeeze through Mingoia cut inside from the right and hit a fine strike in off the underside of the bar for the leveller in the 91st minute.

The home side were clearly buoyed by their goal and were the better side in extra time. When the winner came in the 118th minute from Berry it was probably deserved.

The Owls will look to bounce back when they face Norwich in the Championship on Saturday.
