Wednesday with plenty to play for at mid-season point

The Boxing Day fixtures marked the halfway point in the 2014/15 Championship season and despite a largely frustrating campaign at Hillsborough so far, the Owls are in a reasonable position and look set to progress from where they finished in the previous campaign.

This is Wednesday's 3rd season in the Championship since winning automatic promotion from League One in 2012. In 2013 they picked up a respectable tally of 58 points but in a very competitive campaign that total was only good enough for 18th place. Last season after a terrible first half of the season the Owls recovered to collect 53 points – seeing them finish in 16th position.

At the halfway point of this campaign Wednesday have won 31 points which sees them in 13th place, behind 10th position only on goal difference. The Owls are 7 points off the play-off places at this stage and are 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

Despite the healthy position at this stage many Owls fans have been left frustrtated by what they have seen and that is due to the fact that Wednesday have picked up more points on their travels than they have done at home. No team in the Championship has lost less games on their travels than the Owls have done to date but only the bottom 3 teams have won less times at home than Wednesday have managed.

Although it will be hard for Stuart Gray's side to maintain that level of form on the road, if they can turn draws into wins at Hillsborough there is no reason why this shouldn't turn into Wednesday's best season in terms of both points and position since their return to the Championship. In fact, since being relegated from the Premier League in 2000 the Owls have managed to finish in the top half in the second tier just twice.

Gray has hinted that the club will be looking to make additions in the January transfer window and the moves they make next month will be key to how the second half of the season may go. Drenthe and McGugan have been useful loan signings and would be welcomed back. Should they not stay at Hillsborough beyond the New Year then they will need to be replaced and an experienced proven goalscorer at this level has been a long-term target.
