The winger, who is expected to play against Torquay and Huddersfield to deputise for Chris Brunt who is on international duty with Northern Ireland.

But Hamshaw is desperate to play and he wants to stay at Hillsborough, but with his first-team opportunities being limited to say the least, the summer will be an interesting time for the player.

He told Footymad: "I don’t know what my situation in the summer is yet, nobody does and I think the middle of April is when we get told. I certainly don’t want to leave but if the manager says I have to leave then I have to leave so there’s not a lot I can do apart from try my best in the reserves and when I get back into the first team and hopefully I can show him what I can do when I get a run in the team.

"I don’t think I have let myself down at all. If I get released then I will have to look for another club but if he asks me to stay then I am sure I will if it is right for me. I love this club but there are many other players who have loved their club and come nowhere near signing so that’s the way it goes."

Hamshaw, a veteran of the current Owls set up, said on Tuesday that he felt like he was the most unlucky professional player in England but he can put his problems in the past and look towards the future.

He added: "Every time I play I feel unlucky at the minute as something goes wrong. Nobody likes being injured but I have been unlucky with the injuries I have had.

"All the way back in 2002 when I damaged my ligament, I was probably playing the best football of my career but it is easy to look back and say I should have done this and I should have done that – at the end of the day I have been injured and I have to put that behind me and look forward to the good times."
