Captain speaks out on current situation

Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan raised doubts about his future at Hillsborough on Monday after he commented on his current position during an interview with BBC Scotland.

The Wednesday skipper, who signed a new 2-year deal with the club last season, confirmed his contract length and also stated that pre-season with the Owls is set to commence this Friday. However it is his comments regarding the predicament of the club and his immediate future that will have raised eyebrows among Wednesday supporters.

While the financial situation at the club is no secret, it is rare that players pass much comment on such matters so when The Scottish midfielder stated that a lot of people behind the scenes are leaving and that the club is ‘not a great place to be at the minute’, it did come as a bit of a surprise to hear such a prominent player speak out. The 31-year-old also stated that he intends to have talks at the club in order to find out what he will be doing next season.

Bannan has been an influential member of the Wednesday midfield since joining the club in 2015 and it was somewhat surprising to see him sign a new contract earlier in the year given the way the club was heading and the fact he would be surely be sought after by Championship sides had he chosen to see out his previous contract and become a free agent this summer.
