Sheffield Wednesday were beaten with ease again on their travels on Saturday afternoon as Derby County leapfrogged over them in the Championship table.
Backed by a sell-out away following the Owls made a reasonable start but the hosts soon got on top and individual errors cost Wednesday dear.
To make matters worse, the Owls became the only visiting team not to score in the league at Pride Park this season and only the second team not to do so this year.
The three goals conceded by the Owls takes the goals against tally to 25 in just nine away games, level with Cheltenham Town who are struggling near the bottom of league two, as the worst defensive away record in the top five divisions of English football.
This is in stark contrast to the home form, which has seen just 3 goals conceded in eight matches. Something is clearly wrong with the approach the Owls are adopting away from home and there is a need to get back to basics. Boss, Brian Laws, who spoke of his confidence of getting a result in the build up to the game was left hugely disappointed by the display and held a frank team meeting for around an hour in the dressing room after the final whistle.
The porous nature of the Owls defence must be having a psychological effect going into away matches and this is only going to get worse as the poor run continues.
Wednesday's next away game is a week on Tuesday at Blackpool, who have already been beaten 4 times on home turf this season and that is followed by a trip to Southampton on 6th December. The Saints have lost five times during this campaign at St Mary's and if the hapless form continues in these two fixtures then the Owls will really be struggling and the longer the run goes on for the more pressure is put on to maintain the good home record.
