Sheffield Wednesday recorded their first away win of the season on Saturday win a 3-2 win at Yeovil Town. Manager Gary Megson was looking for a response following Tuesday evening’s abysmal showing at Stevenage and he duly got what he was looking for as his side raced into an early lead only to squander it in controversial fashion before staging a 2nd half comeback.

Wednesday got off to a great start thanks to new loan signing David McGoldrick who headed home Ben Marshall’s cross on 10 minutes to put the visitors in front. Wednesday looked comfortable until midway through the first half when a moment of controversy gave the hosts an undeserved equaliser.

The referee stopped play with Wednesday in possession so that a Yeovil player could receive treatment near to the centre circle. Play resumed with an uncontested drop ball from which Yeovil were supposed to give possession back to the Owls. However instead of allowing goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell to receive possession Glovers striker Kieran Agard chased the ball down and nipped in between O’Donnell and Jones to score into an empty goal.

The Owls players were furious at this incident and to compound matters Jones was injured as a result of colliding with his goalkeeper. In the past such incidents have resulted in the profiting side allowing the opposing team to score a walk-through goal to even things up and in one famous incident where this didn’t take place Arsenal agreed to replay a cup tie against Sheffield United after the Blades had left the field in protest for a short time during a 2-1 defeat in which Kanu set up a goal for Overmars in a similar fashion.

In the post-match interviews Yeovil manager Terry Skiverton revealed this had been his intention but he changed his mind due to the verbal abuse he got from Owls midfielder Jose Semedo following the goal.

The goal rocked the Owls and gave new life to Yeovil who went in to the break 2-1 up when Agard finished well to double his tally.

Wednesday were clearly aggrieved by what had taken place and the arguments continued as the players and staff made their way into the dressing rooms but it was on the pitch where Wednesday were to make their own justice. The visitors levelled matter when substitute Julian Bennett, on for Rob Jones who got injured during the controversial Yeovil goal, scored his 2nd Owls goal as he glanced in a Marshall corner from close range.

With just over 15 minutes remaining the Owls secured all 3 points with Marshall again the provider. The on-loan Stoke player put a free-kick in towards the back post where in-form striker Gary Madine was on hand to score with a well-placed firm header.
