Home defeat costs Wednesday top spot

Sheffield Wednesday’s Under 23 team missed out on winning the Professional Development League for a second season in a row on Friday as they slumped to a 2-1 home defeat to Burnley.

The Owls youngsters needed just a draw to seal top spot and all looked to be going to plan when striker Preslav Borukov gave them the lead inside 5 minutes at Hillsborough. The visitors fought back well though and by half-time they had turned things around to lead 2-1 at the break. Wednesday tried in vain to get the leveller that would have been enough bit they couldn’t find a way through on a rain soaked afternoon in S6.

To add to their disappointment Nottingham Forest won away at Huddersfield to move into 2nd place in the table on goal difference, meaning that the Owls also miss out on the end-of-season North/South play-offs.

Despite the season ending on a slump it has been another positive campaign for the youngsters but they would surely have taken the title once again had much sought after striker George Hirst not missed the vast majority of the season due to an ongoing contract dispute.
