Young Owls on the verge after late escape

2nd successive title in sight

Sheffield Wednesday’s under 23 team moved a step closer to securing the Professional Development League North title on Monday – but only just. The Owls trailed 1-0 at Colchester going into injury time but highly-rated midfielder Fraser Preston popped up to score a vital goal. Just as if it looked like the visitors had done enough to salvage a point Colchester won a penalty but Wednesday keeper Dan Wallis came to the rescue with a spot-kick save to preserve the point.

The result means that the Owls now need a point from their final game of the season – at home to Burnley on Friday afternoon – to take the title for the second season in a row. Defeat however could give Nottingham Forest the chance to overhaul both Bolton and Wednesday and would see the Owls miss out on a top two spot and cost them a place in the end-of-season play-offs. The final game kicks-off at 1pm at Hillsborough on Friday.
