Sheffield Wednesday were left cursing their luck after a dire first half, in which the only two real chances came back off the post for Terry Yorath's men.

Coventry started marginally the better and Youssef Safri came close with a 25-yard free kick after Leigh Bromby was booked for a foul on Jay Bothroyd on nine minutes.

Then on 20 minutes the visitors came within inches of breaking the deadlock after Gerald Sibon flicked on a long throw, finding Paul McLaren whose header hit the post leaving Morten Hyldgaard stranded.

The chance seemed to wake up City, who created their first goal-bound effort four minutes later.

Mo Konjic ducked to get on the end of Gary McAllister's free kick but his header was comfortably held by Kevin Pressman.

Then Dean Gordon made a foray through the middle of the Wednesday half but his right-footed effort was well blocked by Pressman, who slid to collect the follow-up.

Towards the end of a tedious half, Bothroyd came close twice before Wednesday hit the woodwork again, this time from an Alan Quinn header.

After the break, Coventry started well but were flattering to deceive; they came close when a well-worked free kick saw Bothroyd's fierce drive cannon off the bar, but the almost inevitable goal for Wednesday came moments later.

A well worked one-two between Knight and McLaren saw the former run on to drive the ball low past Hyldgaard on 58 minutes.

City rang the changes and Normann, who came on for Gordon, met a McAllister cross at the far post and nodded past Pressman on 76 minutes who tried in vain to stop the ball crossing the line
