Marcus Tudgay heaped further woe on to the head of the man who kick-started his career with a brace that put Sheffield Wednesday on the play-off fringes.

Tudgay, who was taken to Wednesday by Paul Sturrock when the Argyle manager was in charge at Hillsborough, netted twice in the last 18 minutes to secure three points from a game that was closer than the scoreline suggests.

Tudgay had helped put the Owls ahead 12 minute before half-time, when he headed Darren Potter's corner back across goal for Richard Wood to nod home.

The second half belonged to Argyle, who, several times came close to equalising before centre-back Marcel Seip fouled Luke Varney to concede a 72nd-minute penalty that Tudgay converted.

Alan Gow, making his full debut for the Pilgrims after joining from Rangers two weeks ago, pulled one back for Argyle, who then laid siege to the Wednesday goal.

However, in the second minute of stoppage time, Tudgay broke clear before finishing coolly to put a gloss on the score that was not truly merited.

Argyle skipper Carl Fletcher hit the post with a measured shot that curled away from Wednesday goalkeeper Lee Grant when the score was 1-0, and Cillian Sheridan also had two good opportunities to level.

The first came after he was slipped in by Jim Paterson, only to shoot wide, and the second when Darren Purse intercepted his attempt to get a toe on a whipped-in cross from debutant full-back Darcy Blake, on loan from Cardiff.

With Wednesday reeling, Argyle imploded, Seip giving away a penalty for the second home game running.

Gow's 25-yard free-kick, given for handball against Tommy Spurr, preceded a later flurry from the Pilgrims, for whom Jamie Mackie and Gary Sawyer wasted good chances, before Tudgay applied the coup de grace.
