Former Sheffield United striker Gareth Taylor scored the opener in the eighth minute with Glen Little and Ian Moore hitting the target after the interval, leaving the Hillsborough side in deep trouble.

Little almost picked out Taylor lurking in the box, before the big Welshman broke the deadlock in the eighth minute. Midfielder Graham Branch was left in space on the left flank and his curling cross was headed in at the far post by the unmarked Taylor.

Wednesday caught out Burnley in the 20th minute, Leon Knight sweeping the ball over from the left to Gerald Sibon, but the lanky Dutchman fired the ball high into the stand from 15 yards.

Lloyd Owusu should have levelled matters three minutes before the interval as he connected with a Sibon pass but fired over from 12 yards. Shefki Kuqi had a simpler chance when Alan Quinn squared a Paul McLaren cross to his feet, but from six yards out the Finnish international mis-kicked.

Sibon's header from a Derek Geary centre lacked pace as Marlon Beresford tidied up and Kuqi squandered another opportunity, pulling the ball wide from close range before Burnley killed off the game with two goals in four minutes.

Little played a one-two with Robbie Blake before cutting inside, evading a challenge and slotting a low left-foot shot beyond Kevin Pressman's reach in the 56th minute.

Moore grabbed the third sweeping past Geary before finishing in clinical fashion with a crisp strike into the top right-hand corner from 16 yards.

Substitute Simon Donnelly pulled one back after 67 minutes as Burnley failed to clear, slamming a right-foot shot from 18 yards beyond Beresford.

Sibon had a long-range effort saved and then slammed the ball high over the top from 12 yards out as Wednesday produced a late rally.

Beresford produced a string of late saves, the best six minutes from time to keep out Sibon's long-range strike.
