Steve MacLean grabbed his second goal in as many games as Sheffield Wednesday snatched their third win in a row.

The former Glasgow Rangers youngster rounded off a classic move with a cool strike after 21 minutes and it was enough to finish off Wednesday's Yorkshire rivals.

Wednesday survived an early scare and then hit Huddersfield with a sucker punch on their first attack.

Chris Turner's side, desperate for their first home win of the season, could have been behind after only three minutes.

A long throw bounced awkwardly and, as Wednesday dithered, Junior Mendes pounced and placed a volley wide of David Lucas but hit the upright and Guy Branston cleared.

Tony Carss caused problems when he drilled in a free-kick for Town but it was deflected wide.

But Wednesday eased into the game and crafted a classy goal to seize the lead after 21 minutes.

Paul Heckingbottom sent Jon-Paul McGovern scampering down the left and he hooked a low ball in and for the unmarked MacLean who calmly picked his spot and placed a cool shot wide of Ian Gray.

McGovern might have claimed a second for himself but volleyed over from 18 yards and at the other end Lucas held on to a snap shot from ex-Wednesday striker Andy Booth.

Chris Brunt came close to a Wednesday second in the 68th minute but volleyed over after McGovern's cross fell to him.

A shot from Lee Peacock was blocked before Brunt did well again, skipping round two challenges and opening a gap before drilling his shot wide.

Brunt then went for an eye catching acrobatic effort as Town back pedalled but his overhead kick from McGovern's cross drifted wide.

Huddersfield found it heavy going until Booth almost punished a Lee Bullen mistake but Branston dealt with it and Pawel Abbott smashed an optimistic effort over.
