Alan Quinn got Wednesday's New Year off to a great start with his winning goal in a 2-1 victory at Wrexham to end their barren run of 12 league games without a win.

An ecstatic manager Chris Turner said: "It was a fantastic game. We missed a couple of chances in the first half.

"Wrexham came out of the traps in the second half and our players dug in. It was nice to get the breaks that we haven't had in recent games." From the home camp a disappointed manager Denis Smith felt his side should have had something from the game.

He said: "It was a tight game that could have gone either way. On the good side, they came here and attacked us and made a match of it so it was good value for money." Graeme Lee headed wide from Wednesday's first corner and Mark Robins was stopped by Brian Carey only 15 yards out as Wednesday attacked from the start.

A shot from Derek Geary flew across the posts with Robins just unable to get a touch and then, when he broke through on a solo run, goalkeeper Andy Dibble dived to save at his feet.

Robins thumped his next shot against the foot of the post from 20 yards.

Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu opened Wednesday's account with a flying header at the back posts from Paul Smith's left wing cross, giving Dibble no chance.

Wrexham had an early set back when defender Shaun Pejic hobbled off with a pulled hamstring to be replaced by Stephen Thomas, causing an early change to Smith's match plan.

He intended to use Jim Whitley as a marker on Ndumbu-Nsungu but had to switch him to defensive duties.

Carey levelled for Wrexham early in the second half getting the slightest touch with a glancing header from Paul Barrett's centre to wrong foot David Lucas who had made two earlier saves.

His first stop came from Carey's diving header and then he held Chris Llewellyn's low shot after Darren Ferguson put the striker through.

Hector Sam was out of luck with the header from the rebound after a Thomas shot hit the bar, only to find it disallowed for offside.

Robbie Mustoe headed away at the back post to deny Dennis Lawrence when the big centre back seemed likely to head Wrexham into the lead and then Sam hit the side netting.

Wednesday improved as the game went on and Quinn's goal was no more than they deserved. Dibble punched out a cross from Geary but only knocked the ball into the path of Quinn who tapped it in from short range.
