A tale of two penalties not the Best for the Owls

Sheffield Wednesday fell to their second away defeat in a matter of days on Wednesday evening as they were beaten 1-0 at the DW Stadium by Wigan Athletic.

The home side came into the game on the back of their impressive F.A. Cup victory at Manchester City but manager Uwe Rosler conceded after the game that his in form side were second best to the Owls in the first 45 minutes and were fortunate not to be behind at the break.

The decisive moment of the first half came 10 minutes before half-time when Maghoma was brought down by Latics keeper Al Habsi. The Owls winger seemed destined to tap the ball into the empty net had the keeper not hauled him down but although the referee awarded Wednesday the penalty he only booked Al Habsi despite the fact he had denied a clear goal scoring opportunity.

To make matters worse, Leon Bests penalty was telegraphed by the reprieved goalkeeper and the spot kick save gave the home side the timely boost they needed.

After the break the roles were reversed somewhat with Wigan in the ascendancy but Wednesday, fielding a makeshift line up due to a raft of injuries and suspension problems, kept them at bay. That was until just 2 minutes from time when Lavery was judged to have fouled Perch inside the penalty area. Just as he had done against Manchester City at the weekend, Jordi Gomez slotted home from the penalty spot to deny the Owls the point that their resilient performance deserved.

Next up for Wednesday is a home game against Birmingham City on Saturday where a 3rd successive defeat could see them dragged back towards a relegation battle.
