Simek, signed on a free following his release from Arsenal, looked impressive as Wednesday played Manchester City on Sunday.

Immediate comparisons to erstwhile Owl Derek Geary have already been made although it is hoped that the 20-year-old will not be as hot-headed!

But Simek is looking forward to the opportunity to play for Wednesday after signing a long-term contract two weeks ago - and with Swindon-bound Patrick Collins, armed with a new deal, off until December on loan and Lee Bullen possibly out for six weeks - the youngster from Missouri will no doubt be out to impress.

He told Footymad: "I am just trying to settle in as quickly as possible. I am currently getting to know the lads and how they play – every team plays a different way and it’s important I settle in as soon as I can.

"I have just signed a three-year contract so I am really looking forward to my time here. I know it’s going to be difficult this season and we will have to work hard to stay in the championship but I know we can do it. I am looking to make that right-back spot mine though – I know it isn’t going to be easy but I am up for the challenge.

"I think as a unit we will do well at the back. We have got a few new faces and hopefully we all gel as quickly as possible. The most important thing here is to talk to each other all the time and communicate. Like I said it will be a challenge but we are all looking forward to it.

"When I was at QPR, I played five games for them so I know what standard we will be up against but we will get scouting reports on all the teams so we are not that worried about anyone.

Wednesday's most famous American import John Harkes was a hero at Hillsborough although not particularly a legend in Simek's eyes - the players he looked up to as a youngster were all English.

"I have heard of John," Frankie admitted. "I don’t know him personally but I know he played well for a few years here. I have lived over here since I was about ten so my idols were all major players in the Premiership, especially the likes of David Beckham."

Wednesday's final pre-season game ended in a defeat last night as Paul Sturrock's men went down 2-1 to York - with Richie Partridge getting The Owls' goal in a disappointing display.
