Big Mac serves up a brace

The former Rangers striker equalised Kevin Davies’ header from the penalty spot just before half-time and then put The Owls into the lead when he headed home Paul Heckingbottom’s superb left-wing cross.

But Trotters substitute James Sinclair capitalised on a defensive lapse to level the scores although on the whole, Wednesday deserved a win.

Glenn Whelan looked like one to watch out for in the new league one season with a solid performance in the centre of midfield – everything Wednesday did well involved the
Republic of Ireland Under-21 international in some way.

Also impressing for Chris Turner’s men was defender Patrick Collins, who was recently called up for the England Under-20 squad.

The former
Sunderland man was inspiring at the back and came forward confidently – he even nearly scored a cracker after a terrific run from his own area.

The front two of Lee Peacock and MacLean did a good job but more will come from the newly-signed duo as the season progresses, although last season’s main underachiever Adam Proudlock looked sharp after his introduction from the bench.

Matt Hamshaw played in an unaccustomed role in the centre of midfield and despite looking lightweight at times, he should be set for a starting place against
Colchester because of Whelan’s impending suspension.

One sour point was the sight of powerhouse Guy Branston having to be replaced with not even 20 minutes of the game gone.

He was replaced by Chris Carr but more will be known about his situation on Monday when he goes for tests on a possible reoccurrence of a foot problem.
