Boss off the hook

Rumours were rife that the vultures were circling above Laws' head and a defeat against Blackpool would have seen him leave through the Hillsborough managerial revolving door.

But a great second-half performance with goals from Marcus Tudgay and Richard Hinds gave Wednesday a priceless 2-1 win and kept the manager employed - for a few weeks at least.

He said: "I'm under pressure because of the results we've had but it goes with the territory I'm sure you'll all go away and say that was a massive win for Brian Laws because he may have saved his job.

"I can't stop that - that's the media's perception of the situation. I see it differently but you might not believe what I say.

"We've had a torrid start to the season and when you're not winning games there's no calmness there. You snatch at things and that's what we're doing at the moment. One thing I did say at half time was: 'Don't stop'.

"I'd rather they miss than not try at all and I thought our two goals were brilliantly taken. I'm delighted for the players."

Glenn Whelan will miss the trip to Plymouth on Saturday after accumulating five yellow cards this season - giving him a one-match suspension.
