Countdown to kickoff: Barnsley-mad view

Last updated : 07 August 2009 By C. Morris

Sheffield Wednesday kick-off the season with a mouth watering home game against local rivals Barnsley on Saturday.

This is what the editor of tykes-mad had to say on what lies ahead for his side this season:

How has pre-season gone for you?

Very well, won four out of four so far, with Odejayi scoring in every one! Defeated Buxton 3-0, Ferencvaros 3-2, Glenn Hoddle Academy 5-1 and CD Alhaurino 3-0.

(Barnsley have continued to show fine form in pre-season with convincing wins against local opposition and a more than creditable draw with Manchester City).

Are you pleased with the signings your club has made?

What signings? Oh yes, Onome Sodje from York and David Preece on a free transfer to be back up keeper. Hardly Ronaldo and Kaka is it. We still desperately need strengthening and the fact we are just weeks away from the start of the season is starting to worry supporters.

What realistically are you aiming for this season?

Well for the last two summers we have been looking for top half and ended up just staying up. Unless there’s some good signings in the next couple of weeks, I can’t see us finishing any higher than 16th.

Which player has past his sell by date?

Mounir El Haimour was a poor acquisition last summer whilst Darren Moore and Jon Macken could be heading into their final seasons with the club.

Have you got the right manager in charge?

In my opinion no! He should have gone after about 10 games last season, I think if we are struggling around October-November this season he will finally be out.

What advice would you give him?

Play players in their correct positions. Jamal Campbell-Ryce was in the form of his life on the right wing, but Davey moved him into central midfield for some bizarre reason and his form dipped dramatically. He was moved back to the right for the final five or six games and arguably kept us up!

Who do you see as your key player?

Campbell-Ryce for his ability to change a match like he did against Doncaster last season. There’s also hope for our 15 year old Rueben Noble- Lazarus and hopefully Iain Hume if he plays again.

Who would you most like to beat this season?

Sheffield United- for their despicable behaviour last season and ending our striker's season.

Where will you finish?

18th

How do you rate Sheffield Wednesday's chances next season and where do you think they will finish?

Well Wednesday seem to have a stable boardroom for a change and if they can make a couple of key signings a top 10 finish is in reach... unfortunately!

If money was not a problem, which current Championship player would you like to see at Oakwell?

Obafemi Martins- I reckon he would plunder a few goals! (this was of course beforehe was sold)

Which position do you feel Barnsley need to address the most before the start of the season?

Upfront!!! It’s in need of major surgery!
