Defender on injury nightmare - exclusive

The Owls left-back, brought in by Paul Sturrock from Leicester City after impressing under the Scotsman at Plymouth, has been out since the end of last season.

He made his comeback against Colchester last week and impressed again against Wolves on Saturday - now the player just wants to concentrate on keeping his place in the Owls team and getting fitter.

"It's fantastic to be back," he told Footymad. "I'm delighted because the fans have been fantastic with me when I played against Colchester and against Wolves and personally, I am really pleased how my comeback has gone so far. Personally I am delighted I am back playing and glad that I'm playing.

"Now I can give 110percent for Wednesday and take encouragement from our performances and it's good I am getting at opportunity to be a part of that so hopefully we can win a few games between now and the end of the season."

Gilbert has also praised Doncaster Rovers where he spent a successful month on loan to help him with his fitness.

He added: "The initial problem I was out with was my anterior cruciate ligament and in the last game of last season I had to go in for surgery and I was out for nine months so that was really tough. So when I recovered I have been working on my fitness really, I went out on loan to Doncaster Rovers and did well there.

"There are a good club, have some good lads and played really good football and they should get a play-off place. But then I come back and bided my time and thankfully got my opportunity to play some games which I am delighted about."

Needless to say, after the defender's nightmare, he has had lots to prove and is looking forward to putting the past behind him.

He said: "Oh yeah. I had some horrendous times while I was out, especially when you see the lads go on a good run. The change of manager of course was not a good thing for me to take because I have to prove to a new boss what I can do because it was a difficult time as I couldn't prove myself to the new gaffer so that was difficult to take as well.

"I have had a lot of good days and bad days
- more bad days but now hopefully it's time for me to get some good days."
