Wayne Andrews scored in the first half while Chris Brunt and Steve MacLean added two second-half markers to make sure The Owls did the double over Barnsley and strengthened their play-off push.

Algeria international Bougherra has been a hit with the fans and thinks that Wednesday's current run can get them into the top six and even challenge for a Premiership push come the end of the season.

He told Footymad: “We are very happy with another away win, the team now are playing consistently match after match and I think that we could be looking good for the play-offs. We are very confident at the moment and we believe we can win every game we play in, we have some good players and we are doing well in the championship.

“Having so many games in quick succession at the moment is good for us because we are currently doing well and we can't wait for the next game to come.

“It's brilliant we have won four straight away games; it's great for the fans that travel in numbers to support us so a big thank you to them. The fans have taken to me as well which is really good because I am enjoying my time here at Sheffield Wednesday."

Crossley meanwhile was sympathetic to his hometown-team's clause but thought that Wednesday were the better team overall.

He said: “I felt a little sorry for Barnsley after the game but I am a professional and the team I am currently playing for, I want them to win – they are my hometown club and I wish them all the best in the long run.

“We were excellent in the second half, but I thought we were poor in the first half, they were the better team in the first half but we came in at the break and a few words were said. From then we really pushed on from there and played some great stuff so we had an idea that they would come at us early doors so we could get them late in the game but to be fair it could have been four or five.

“Confidence is high but we are not getting carried away because we have won our last four away games, we have to keep our feet on the ground and hopefully pick up our home form a little bit. But at the moment we are taking one game at a time – and we have put ourselves in with a good chance of the play-offs, there's no doubt about that.”
