Sheffield Wednesday have announced that their former custodian Nicky Weaver has rejoined the club in a coaching capacity. Sheffield-born Weaver has been given the role of goalkeeping coach for the academy and will concentrate on passing on his skills and experience to the under 18's and younger age groups and will also assist at times with the under 21 team.

Weaver, a Wednesday fan through and through made his name at Manchester City where he was a popular figure with the City fans. Injuries curtailed his career whilst with City and in 2005 he was loaned out to Wednesday and enjoyed an impressive spell between the sticks which helped the Owls to maintain Championship status having been promoted the previous season.

Weaver returned to Hillsborough in 2010 on a permanent deal and was the Owls number 1 throughout the 2010/11 season. Injuries and the form of Stephen Bywater meant he made less appearances the following season but was part of the squad that earned promotion finishing 2nd in League One in 2010/11. Wednesday signed Chris Kirkland in the summer of 2012 and with Weaver's injury problems still prevalent he was released by the club at the on of the 2012/13 season. The 35-year-old is likely to be a popular addition to the Hillsborough coaching staff.
