Former Sheffield Wednesday club secretary Graham Mackrell has today been charged by the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to the Hillsborough disaster.

Mackrell, who was Company Secretary and Safety Officer at the time of the tragedy, has been charged with breaches of Health and Safety and also Safety and Sports Grounds legislation. The CPS, who examined evidence compiled by Operation Resolve over a 4-year period from 2012, stated that these charges relate to alleged failures to carry out his duties as required. Mr Mackrell will be due to face his charges in court on August 9th.

No charges were brought against SWFC as an organisation as the CPS stated it only now exists as a paper record of a legal entity and in its current form bears no representation of the club that existed at the time of the disaster.

96 Liverpool supporters died following crushing at the Leppings Lane end of Hillsborough stadium during the FA Cup semi-final on 15th April 1989.
