Game of two halves as Owls crumble at City

Sheffield Wednesday were sent packing in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday evening as current holders and Premier League Champions Manchester City gave them a 7-0 thumping.

The result didn't look on the cards at half time as the Owls restricted their illustrious hosts to few chances and might have nicked the lead early on in the game when Gary Madine failed to connect with a cross from Jacques Maghoma when in an excellent position.

Having gone in at 0-0 Wednesday would have been happy with their fist 45 minutes work but all that was undone within 10 minutes of the restart as Lampard, Dzeko and Navas fired the home side into a 3-0 lead. Things got worse 5 minutes later when a fortunate ricochet led to Zayatte fouling Lampard inside the penalty area. The Wednesday centre-back received a harsh red card and Yaya Toure made it 4-0 from the spot.

Dzeko, substitute Pozo and Lampard added further goals as what looked like it could be a night to remember at half-time had quickly become a night to forget for the Owls.

Stuart Gray made a number of changes to the Wednesday side that had beaten Reading at the weekend, giving rests to the likes of Nuhiu, Westwood, Loovens and Semedo. The priority for the Owls is clearly on maintaining progress in the Championship and Stuart Gray will be keen to ensure that his team does not carry any ill effects from this result into Saturday's game at Cardiff City.
