Sheffield Wednesday having been handed a home draw against lower league opposition in the 1st round of the Carling Cup.

The Owls will entertain Rochdale at Hillsborough in the week commencing 10th August. The only other competitive meeting between the two sides came in the same competition back in 2002 when a solitary goal from Gerald Sibon was enough to see Wednesday squeeze through.

Rochdale enjoyed a top six finish last season but missed out on promotion via the play-offs, losing out to Gillingham in the semi-finals.

Wednesday will be looking to do much better in the competition than they faired last season when they lost out at home to local rivals Rotherham in the first round.

Elsewhere locally Sheffield United have drawn a home tie against Port Vale, Barnsley travel to Lincoln, Doncaster face a trip to Notts County and Rotherham welcome Derby County to the Don Valley Stadium.
