Kav's future thoughts

The 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international has been exceptional in his one-month loan spell but goes back to his parent club, Sunderland, after the weekend's clash at the Britannia Stadium.

The player moved to Hillsborough mainly to prove his fitness after a long knee injury although finding a way back into the Black Cats' team could prove to be difficult.

Michael Johnson is in a similar situation with his loan spell ending - but he has made it clear that he would snub a return to Derby in favour of staying at Wednesday.

Kavanagh though has said he would like to return to Wearside if he had the opportunity of regular first-team football but that cannot be guaranteed at the Stadium of Light.

He told the Northern Echo: "I'd been out for a while and the gaffer (Roy Keane) said that I needed games, which I knew myself that I did. Hopefully, it's all for the good of getting fit again and back in the team at Sunderland.

"But if that isn't going to happen, so be it. I'll have to start looking at my options and see what's available. At the moment, I'm just enjoying playing and being involved at Sheffield Wednesday. It's a huge club and it shouldn't be in the position it's in.

"The knee's fantastic now. I haven't had one problem, and long may it continue. But I need a run of games because I want to have a long spell where I stay injury free."
