Sheffield Wednesday winger Marco Matias was awarded the Mitre goal of the season title at the Football League Awards ceremony on Sunday evening.

The Portuguese player won the award for his fine strike in the 1-1 draw at Leeds United back in August. He picked the ball up wide on the right, looping the ball over the defender with his fight foot before unleashing an unstoppable strike from the angle of the penalty area that flew past the keeper and dipped in off the underside of the bar.

Each of the 72 Football League clubs nominated their teams goal of the season and fans were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite goal. The top 5 goals were then taken forward to the awards night with those in attendance voting for the winner with Marco prevailing.

Matias' first season in English football has been hampered by an ongoing groin injury but he has recently returned to the squad, making a scoring impact as the Owls won at Nottingham Forest last month.
