McGovern welcomes competition

The former Celtic winger who had a loan spell at United has been in fine form so far this season and is just as direct at the Rawmarsh-born Hamshaw.

He helped set up Steve MacLean for his winner against Huddersfield on Saturday by showing his versatility by switching from the right to the left.

But the Scotsman believes he has been given a new lease of life by Chris Turner following his move south of the border

He told Footymad: “I obviously didn’t enjoy Livingstone at all and was not enjoying my football so I came here and the manager is happy for me to express myself and play in a position I want to play so hopefully I can continue to play well.”

He also believes that the team is starting to gel on the field and becoming good friends off it.

McGovern continues: “I think everyone here has settled in quite well. Ten new faces into a club sometimes can be hard but we all meet up outside training so we are getting on well.

“Everyone is new to the team and trying to get to know Sheffield well so we all stick together and it helps.

“I have got some competition with Matt Hamshaw but it is the same all over the park, Hammy can play inside and I have played in the middle on occasions but that is what it should be like at a big football club with everyone pushing each other on.”
