More Tuesday torment for Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday slumped to their fourth home defeat of the season last night, due to a combination of slack defending and some dubious decisions from the officials.

The call to disallow a goal by Leon Clarke on the advice of a linesman for a seemingly non-existent foul on a defender in the second half infuriated fans and players alike.

The apparent injustice was compounded just moments later when Reading scored what proved to be the winner with the home side feeling there may have been a foul in the build up to the goal.

Wednesday were unlucky not to grab a late equaliser as the visitors defending doggedly, clearing a Wood effort off the line before goalkeeper Lee Grant was denied when his goal-bound header was tipped round the post.

Aside from the dodgy decisions the Owls must look at the goals they conceded and think they might have done better. The Reading equaliser came from a flick on at a corner with striker Kevin Doyle inexplicably left unmarked at the back post to nod home.

The winner came with the Owls outnumbered at the back with both left sided player, Spurr and Small caught up field.

Wednesday have now been beaten four times in the league on home soil this season. Three of those defeats have happened in midweek games, two of which were against sides struggling in the lower reaches of the Championship. The Owls were also knocked out of the League Cup at the first attempt at home to League Two side Rotherham on a Tuesday evening.

Wednesday used to play midweek home matches on Wednesday evening but this was changed in 2005 by the manager at the time Paul Sturrock who believed he could prepare his side better for Tuesday games, giving added recovery time for the weekend fixture ahead.
