Nice guys lose out

Chris Turner slammed his player’s attitudes after the game for not fighting to keep their 2-0 lead before losing 3-2 and believes that the lack of battlers in the Wednesday side is clear for all to see,

He said: “How did we lose that game? Because we are not strong enough and we can’t handle the battle in the second division, I have said it many a time.

“We have got some good players who can play football at times but to get out of this league you have to have the strength, power and the character to win games away from home when you are leading like we did against Luton. That wasn’t the first time we have lost a game from being in a dominant position this season.

“We have been on a downward spiral since we have had the injuries set in and because we have a nice bunch of lads, nice lads don’t win you anything, and I told them that for the first time this season after Luton.”

Steve Howard, who grabbed the stoppage-time winner was a target of Turner’s in the summer and he came back to haunt the man who wanted to acquire his services.

Turner added: “I tried to sign Steve Howard at the start of the season and the Owls fans will probably realise that now after the game, you can turn two-goal deficits into a 3-2 win with players like Steve, but we just couldn’t afford him.”
