Whelan, a 20-year-old defender-cum-midfielder has represented Republic of Ireland Under-21's four times and it was reported yesterday that he should sign a pre-contract agreement shortly.

The player made his full City debut in the UEFA Cup clash with Total Network Solutions this season and has also impressed on loan just up the road from The City of Manchester Stadium while at Bury.

Whelan is extremely looking forward to the move and has spoke in depth to Chris Turner about how he will figure in next season’s plans.

As one youngster comes in, another will leave with Wilson being told that he will not be part of the first-team plans.

The academy midfielder, son of former Owls player and manger Danny, has been told that he can train with other clubs with a view to a move elsewhere next season.
