Owls and Tigers play out typical pre-season affair

Sheffield Wednesday played host to Premier League Hull City at Hillsborough on Saturday and gained a creditable draw but in truth the game was clearly more important for fitness purposes than gaining any type of result as the two teams ultimately cancelled each other out.

On a sunny but fresh summer afternoon conditions were near perfect for the game both sides seemed reluctant to extend themselves in what turned out to be a rather tepid tussle.

Both sides had chances to get on the score sheet in each half with Clarke and Cousin wasteful in the first 45 for the respective teams and Marney failed to find the target after a fine run in the second 45 for the visitors.

Owls substitute Akpo Sodje almost won it late on for the Owls but in truth there was little to rouse the sparse crowd of just over 5,000 at Hillsborough.

The priority at this stage of proceedings is clearly to get everyone up to speed without risking needless injuries. This seems even more important to a Wednesday squad that was somewhat worryingly absent of three of the summer signings, Michael Gray, Tommy Miller and new Captain Darren Purse.

Wednesday host an open day at the ground on Sunday and the first team will get their next run-out at Northampton on Tuesday evening.
