Owls appoint Portuguese head coach

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that Carlos Carvalhal is to be their new head coach, though details of how long his contract is are yet to be released. The news officially broke on the clubs website at 10.30pm on Tuesday evening.

Carvalhal has been rumoured to have been the choice of new Owls Chairman Dejphon Chansiri since Stuart Gray was sacked weeks ago, so much so that many bookmakers had stopped taking bets on the next Wednesday boss.

The 49-year-old has not held a mangers position since 2012 but has a vast CV, including Besiktas, Sporting Lisbon, Maritimo and SC Braga.

Carvalhal brings with him his own Portuguese backroom staff in the shape of Joao Mario, Joao Cunha and Bruno Lage so it remains to be seen what will happen to the Owls existing coaching staff.

Mr. Chansiri spoke of his aim to bring aggressive, attractive, entertaining football to Hillsborough and stated that Carvalhal fits into this philosophy. A full press conference to confirm the appointments is scheduled for July 9th – possibly the first available date for the Chairman to be able to personally present his first managerial appointment at the football club.
