Owls continue to fire blanks on home soil

Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City shared the spoils in a 0-0 draw at Hillsborough on Tuesday evening.

Sometimes 0-0 draws can be anything but dull with both sides coming away wondering how they failed to score – this wasn't one of those matches. Birmingham played as though they came for a point from the start and ultimately Wednesday did not do enough to break them down.

The Owls created some chances but were generally wasteful in front of goal and failed to hit the target often enough.

The best move of the match came in the first half when some crisp one-touch passing between Maghoma, Baker and Nuhiu resulted in Maghoma cutting inside in the box but his low drive was tipped around the post by Randolph in the City goal.

Birmingham's only first half attack of note came in the last minute when a low cross from Grounds was cleared over his own bar by Mattock with Donaldson coming in behind him for what would otherwise have been a tap in.

The second half began with Maguire clipping a free-kick agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock but missing the target would be the story of the half.

Nuhiu fired a snap-shot just wide, Baker fired into the Kop with Randolph bearing down on him and Nuhiu headed over from a floated cross when he really should have at least forced Randolph into a save.

Birmingham offered an occasional threat on the wings through Gray and Cotterill but Westwood had a very quiet night in the Owls goal.

Will Keane made his Owls debut and showed some nice touches but didn't really have a chance in front of goal. Lewis Baker made his first start and was willing to receive and comfortable on the ball but was too easily shrugged off when well positioned a couple of times in the 2nd half.

Wednesday remain in 9th place in the Championship but their frustrations at home are clear to see. In 14 games at Hillsborough the have won 15 points compared with 23 points gained from 13 games on their travels.

The Owls have only scored 7 times at home this season, lower than any other team in the division. Bottom-placed Blackpool have scored 9 times at home and next to bottom Wigan are the next lowest with 14.
