Owls earn a point as Blades blunted again

Derby draw at Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United played out a third 0-0 draw in succession in testing conditions at Hillsborough on Monday evening.

The result was probably a fair one given the pattern of the game. Both sides found it hard to maintain any continued pressure as the wind and rain lashed down on S6 for much of the contest. There was plenty of effort and endeavour but clear cut chances were few and far between though both sides will look back on an opportunity missed in either half.

The visitors had the best chance of the first half when former Owls striker Gary Madine found himself free at the back post but Keiren Westwood was quick off his line to save the close range header and then smother the loose ball. In the second half the Owls had the best chance of the game when Aarons low cross was met by Hutchinson but his first time strike was straight at Henderson.

Wednesday will take heart from the fact that they matched their promotion-chasing rivals as opposed to the last meeting where the 0-0 draw was earned thanks to a rear-guard action that offered no attacking intent.

The Owls are the first team to stop the Blades from scoring in 2 matches this season and Steve Bruce's side are now within 3 points of 7th-placed Derby County in the Championship table ahead of Saturday's trip to the Rams.
