Owls enjoy derby success

Sheffield Wednesday reserves picked up their first win of the season, beating city rivals Sheffield United 2-1 at Hillsborough on Tuesday evening.

The first team were made to pay for a poor defensive first half by their bitter rivals last Friday and it looked as though the second string encounter was heading the same way when experienced wide man Glen Little gave the visitors the lead from a Kyel Reid assist with ten minutes of the first half remaining.

United fielded a strong team that included 4 trialists – Fulham’s Elliot Omozusi, Frenchman Fabrice Pancrate, Senegalese international Henri Camara and Facundo Zampa alongside some first team fringe players wanting to make an impression with manager Kevin Blackwell watching from the stands.

The home side were not short of experience themselves with the likes of Simek, McAllister, Miller, Esajas, Jeffers, Clarke and Sodje all starting the game but the Owls had little to offer in terms of levelling the score in the first half.

As with the first team derby, the second half was a different matter and on this occasion Wednesday’s efforts enabled them to overcome their opponents.

Two goals in quick succession from Sodje and then out of favour front man Francis Jeffers gave the Owls a lead before keeper Richard O’Donnell saw the Owls home by saving a penalty from Reid late on.

This hardly ranks as any consolation in relation to the first teams derby defeat but does at least bring to an end a poor run of results for the second string.
