Owls lose red card appeal

Sheffield Wednesday will be without centre-back Sam Hutchinson for their trip to Birmingham City on Saturday after their appeal against his red card failed. The former Chelsea player will serve a 1-match suspension.

Hutchinson was shown a red card in conceding a penalty during Tuesday's dramatic 3-2 home win against Bristol City.

The defender appeared to stumble before making a clumsy and fruitless attempt to win the ball as the visitors closed in on a goalscoring opportunity.

Although denying a clear goal scoring opportunity in the penalty area is no longer an automatic red card offence the referee can dismiss the player if the offence is violent conduct, deliberate handball or if the challenge is deemed to have no chance of winning the ball or no attempt is made to win the ball.

Vincent Sasso came on to cover the centre-back position on Tuesday but Glenn Loovens has recovered from injury and could make appearance of the season to deputise for Hutchinson at St Andrews.
