With the emergency loan deadline coming into effect today Sheffield Wednesday have moved to cover their goalkeeper crisis by signing Lee Nicholls.

The 18-year-old England Under 19’s international moves to Hillsborough on loan from Premier League side Wigan Athletic and is likely to be in the squad for the trip to Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday.

Richard O’Donnell made an impressive appearance in goal for the Owls in Saturday’s defeat at Southampton but as things stood he was the only fit 1st team keeper at the club. Established number 1 Nicky Weaver is set to miss most if not all of the remainder of the season with a groin injury and Arron Jameson is currently sidelined with a pelvic problem.

Nicholls, who has had loan spells at Hartlepool and Shrewsbury already this season, is regarded as a bright prospect by the coaching staff at Wigan and will now be with the Owls until the end of the season. The agreement between the two clubs means that the youngster can still play for the Wigan reserve team during his spell at Hillsborough.
