Premier League side progress in Carabao Cup

Sheffield Wednesday's League Cup campaign for 2018/19 ended at the 2nd round stage this evening as Wolves won 2-0 at Hillsborough.

Both sides came into the game on the back of encouraging results with Wednesday having won two in a row in the Championship and Wolves having drawn with Manchester City at the weekend. However, ea expected neither side resembled the teams they had recently fielded with Jos Luhukay changing his entire starting 11 and Wolves also making a raft of changes.

The Owls fielded plenty of experience alongside some young players with Steven Fletcher, Fernando Forestieri, George Boyd and David Jones in the starting eleven and they gave as good as they got in a competitive if largely uneventful first half.

After the break the visitors, who won the Championship in some style last season, looked to show their Premier League quality and took the lead within 10 minutes of the restart.

Traore created the opening on Wednesday's left-side of defence and his deflected cross fell invitingly for Leo Bonatini who made no mistake with a low finish past Wildsmith.

Gibbs-White hit a post as Wolves looked to put the game beyond the home side but with only one goal in Wednesday were still in the game and both Fletcher and Forestieri forced Ruddy into smart saves.

With the game approaching the final five minutes Wolves sealed their progress into the third round. Portuguese substitute Costa was fouled in the penalty area by Fox and the winger stepped up to send Wildsmith the wrong way from the spot-kick.

Next up for Wednesday is a trip to Reading in the Championship on Saturday.
