Scotland started their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign with a 5-1 win in Malta to go above England on goal difference. After spurning a number of 1st half chances the visitors were under some pressure going in level at 1-1 at half-time but a confident 2nd half display saw them pick up 3 points.

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan started the game in midfield for Scotland and was pivotal to much of their attacking play, starting off many attacks for the visitors with a wide array of positive passing that the Owls fans have become accustomed to seeing over the past year.

New Owls striker Steven Fletcher came on as a 2nd half substitute and bagged a goal with a powerful close range header. The former Sunderland striker almost added another but saw his chip from an angle come back off the crossbar having gone round the keeper but Robert Snodgrass was on hand to tap in the rebound for his hat-trick to complete the scoring.
