Owls squad rebuilding starts to take shape

Having released a number of players in recent weeks Gary Megson has added a third summer signing to his Sheffield Wednesday squad in the shape of Julian Bennett.

The former Nottingham Forest defender was out of contract and has agreed a two-year deal at Hillsborough. The defender has played at centre-back before but his preferred position is left-back, a spot that has been a problem for the Owls recently. Tommy Spurr’s loss of form saw him lose his place in the side and he left the Owls last week for Doncaster, numerous other players were tested in the left-back role last season with little success and so the acquisition of Bennett will hopefully be a major boost for the team.

The 26-year-old lost his place in the first team at Forest over the past couple of seasons, largely as a result of injury problems. He suffered from a dislocated shoulder and knee ligament damage which saw him side-lined for long spells of the past two campaigns.

Prior to that the Nottingham born defender had become a firm favourite at the City Ground following his move from Walsall where he started his professional career. Bennett received Forest’s player of the year award for the 2007/08 season and also earned a place in the League One team of the season as the club won promotion to the Championship.

Forest managed a record 24 clean sheets during their promotion season and Bennett was renowned for his tenacity and never say die attitude, attributes which should endear him to the Hillsborough faithful.
