Wednesday Vs Sunderland: Team news & preview

Sheffield Wednesday face Sunderland at Hillsborough tonight with their failure to capture a central defender so far this summer looking like catching up with them. The Owls are without Sam Hutchinson who is equally adept at centre-back and in defensive midfield and Glenn Loovens is also struggling to be fit.

Both players picked up injuries during Saturday’s draw with QPR and left-back Daniel Pudil, who deputised in that game, is likely to have to play alongside Tom Lees at the heart of the defence in Loovens doesn’t prove his fitness.

Elsewhere, Kieran Lee remains side-lined with a hip problem and time will tell if influential forward Fernando Forestieri will be available having sat out the weekend game due to an internal disciplinary issue.

Sunderland are without striker Duncan Watmore, midfielder Jack Rodwell and defender Bryan Oviedo with all 3 yet to feature this season but they have no fresh injury concerns. Former Wednesday loan player Aiden McGeady has started the season in fine form and is likely to pose a big threat to the Owls injury hit defence.

Sunderland have taken 4 points from their opening 2 games including an impressive win at Norwich at the weekend while Wednesday are still looking for their first league win. The Owls have only beaten the Black Cats once in the last 12 meetings between the 2 sides.
