Owls told they can fly for free

Smith, signed from Turner's former club Hartlepool this time last year, spent most of the 2003/04 season out injured and when he did play, he did not exactly set the world alight.

He scored twice, both at the start of the last campaign but sometimes his deliveries into the box could have been better.

It is testament to Chris Brunt and Richard Evans though as the Wednesday manager keeps his faith in some of the youngsters he brought to the club.

Armstrong on the other hand was one of the worse signings made in recent years by The Owls.

Signed in a cash deal from Huddersfield Town by Terry Yorath, the totally one-footed player never impressed at Hillsborough in any of the positions he played.

Scoring one goal in his Wednesday career, Turner obviously took a disliking to the former Nottingham Forest player by sending him out on loan to Grimsby Town last season and this summer he has been training on his own.

Neither Smith nor Armstrong have made the trip to Ibiza to play in a friendly tournament.

Meanwhile, another left-footed Owl has joined Bury after boss Graham Barrows made the atrocious Brian Barry-Murphy his fifth signing of the summer.
